Houghton, MIJanuary 4th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen high school hockey team continued their season this evening against the Jeffers Jets.

1st Period: The opening minutes of the game were controlled by the Redmen, but no goals to show for it. The Redmen were without two familiar names in the lineup for tonight’s game as Joe DeMattia and Caleb Fries were out with illness. 2:39 into the game, the Redmen were able to get a goal onto the board. Senior Cole Ranta buried from two nice passes from Dylan King and Ethan Phillips. Seconds later, Marquette scored another goal from Junior Colin Nemacheck, unassisted. 13 minutes to go in the opening period, Marquette led 2-0, tallying seven shots, only giving up one. The Redmen continued to dominate the period as they controlled the zone for the next several minutes. Considering the amount of shots Marquette had on net, Jeffers goaltender Simon Rajala was holding his own. With about 9 minutes to play in the period, the Redmen were offered their first power play of the game, and seconds into it, Ethan Phillips scored his second goal of the game, assisted from Adams and Ranta. Marquette led 3-0. The Redmen would score two more goals in the period as Sophomore C.J Carter scored his first goal in a Redmen jersey, the 2nd goal came from Drew Dellies with 50 seconds remaining in the opening period. Heading into the locker room, the Redmen led 5-0 after dominating the shot total 25-6.

2nd Period: The Redmen continued to apply pressure right out of the gates, getting two quick shots in a matter of seconds. 2 minutes into the period, Drew Dellies scored his 2nd goal of the game, assisted from Grange. In the next 2 minutes, Brayden Grange would score two more goals for Marquette to take the 8-0 lead. The Redmen sent two men to the box with just under 13 minutes to play, but the Redmen were easily able to kill the clock to return to full strength. With the MHSAA mercy rule, the clock continued to run after the 8th goal was scored, so the final minutes came quickly. Marquette ended the game after two periods of play, thanks to the mercy rule, defeating the Jets 8-0. The Redmen won the shot total 42-9.
