Redmen Hockey Mercy Negaunee Miners 9-1

Negaunee, MIFebruary 6, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team flattened the Negaunee Miners tonight with a 9-1 mercy victory on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redmen came out of the gate ready to go, testing the young Miners goalie immediately. An early Cole Ranta goal slipped in, with help from Andrew Fedrizzi, to put Marquette up 1-0 in the first period.

The rest of the period unraveled slightly with the Redmen taking 17 shots on goal to Negaunee’s five, but no more scoring for the duration. Marquette went without several in their squad due to injury and illness for tonight’s game.

The Redmen got a promising chance with a solid shot on goal to close out the period, but they went into the break with no change to the scoreboard.

Cooper Anderson opened the period with a goal for the Redmen to quench the drought. Marquette went up 2-0 with just three minutes gone in the second period.

With things back on track, the Redmen played a much steadier period. Another Redmen goal, set up by Fedrizzi and helped along by Ethan Phillips, put Marquette up 3-0 against the Miners. An Evan Kroll goal, with help from Ansel Frost and Phillips, followed in short order to make it 4-0.

The Redmen closed out the period with one more goal from Ranta, Cooper Anderson with the assist, to give Marquette a whopping 5-0 lead going into the third period.

Dylan Baldwin got things going in the third with an early goal to go 6-0 over the Miners. Hogan Nemetz and Jake Garrow picked up the assist. Kroll followed up with another goal 18 seconds later to make it 7-0, putting Negaunee in grave danger for a mercy end to the game.

Negaunee followed up with their first goal of the game, though the call ignited some debate in the stands as to whether or not the puck actually made it over the line. Nevertheless, the Miners went up 7-1 behind Marquette.

Ranta secured the hat trick with another goal, helped by Cooper Anderson, to make it 8-1 late in the period. Kroll followed up to secure his own hat trick and a mercy end to the game, the victory seemingly inevitable from the second period on.

The Redmen will be back on the ice Tuesday, February 11th on 103 WFXD. Tune in at 6:30 pm for the pregame show, puck drops at 7:00 pm.
