Marquette, MIDecember 7, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 4-1 win over the Saline Hornets.  Unlike like their matchup the previous night, Marquette and Saline went back and forth, but Marquette did enough to earn another win on their home ice.

The Marquette Redmen opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game as Jack Sides put the puck past the Saline goaltender on the first rush up the ice.  Saline tied the game at one a few minutes later when Connor Wright capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Redmen.  From there the scoring pace slowed significantly due to good defensive play from both teams, and after the first period, the teams were tied 1-1.

The defensive struggle continued into the second period, and despite chances going both ways, the deadlock remained.  The Redmen seemed to gain momentum late in the frame, but they were unable to put the puck in the net.  Some great saves, a few lucky bounces, and zero goals later, the period ended with the score still tied 1-1.

Marquette started the third period with intensity, barely missing a goal as Jake Peterson hit the crossbar.  The Redmen made no mistake less than a minute later when Dylan Baldwin deflected a shot past the goaltender and gave Marquette a 2-1 lead.  Owen Riipi added another goal to the Marquette side of the scoreboard minutes later, and the Redmen went up 3-1.  The Hornets seemed to step up the pace a bit later in the period, but Marquette’s defense held on and Gaetano Cammarata added an empty-netter  to earn a 4-1 win and a weekend sweep over Saline.

The next game here on Fox Sports Marquette will be on Tuesday, December 10, when the Marquette Redmen hockey team travels to Calumet to take on the Copper Kings.  The puck drops on that game at 7:00 P.M., and you can listen live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 and 99.9 or online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
