Marquette, MI – December 10, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team fell to the Calumet Copper Kings in overtime on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Redmen locked horns with the Kings early on in the first period. Calumet pulled away and put the pressure on Marquette, but the Redmen responded well. The Redmen struck first with a Hogan Nemetz goal to claim a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game.
Calumet dictated the pace of play as Marquette continued to adjust to the Copper Kings’ speed. The Kings scored late in the period to tie it up at 1-1 before the buzzer.
Marquette came back from the break strong in the early stages of the second period. The score remained knotted up, however, as quality shots on goal were few and far between for both teams.
Copper King Lincoln Beiring ended the drought with a goal late in the period to put Calumet back out in front at 2-1 over the Redmen.
Calumet didn’t stop there. The Copper Kings immediately followed up with a short-handed goal from Tanner Rowe to bring the score to 3-1 just before the buzzer.
Marquette began the third period with a 60 second power play and a chance to shift the momentum in their favor.
Play returned to five-on-five with no change in the score. Marquette struggled to gain a foothold as the clock became as much their enemy as the Copper Kings.
Marquette’s Cooper Anderson injected some life into the Redmen game with a goal late in the period to put the score at 3-2 behind the Copper Kings.
Anderson, with help from Gaetano Cammarata and Andrew Fedrizzi, followed up with another goal and just 11 seconds to go in the game to tie it up at 3-3 and force some overtime hockey.
Just a minute into overtime, however, the Copper Kings found the back of the net to secure their 4-3 win over the Marquette Redmen.
The Redmen will be back in action on Tuesday, December 17th against Hancock on WFXD. Tune in at 6:30 pm for pregame, puck drops at 7:00 pm.
