Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Lake Orion 7-1

The Redmen huddle up before the game

Chelsea, MIJanuary 30, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team opened the Chelsea Showcase tournament with a 7-1 win over the Lake Orion Dragons on Thursday afternoon.  Coming off a weekend sweep of the Port Huron Northern Huskies, the Redmen kept their winning streak going and improved to 16-3 on the season against the Dragons.

Lake Orion won the opening faceoff and immediately put pressure on the Redmen.  There were a couple of hard body checks by the Dragons early on, both perfectly legal, and it was clear that Lake Orion planned to set the tone physically from the start.  Marquette didn’t get a shot on goal until five minutes into the game, but were able to generate some quality scoring opportunities once the Redmen offense finally got rolling.  Neither team was able to find an advantage though, and the teams went to the locker rooms after one period deadlocked 0-0.

Marquette started quickly in the second period, with Gaetano Cammarata scoring just 21 seconds after the resumption of play to put the Redmen up 1-0.  Both the Redmen and the Dragons had powerplay opportunities that passed with no score, and the Redmen had a few more quality chances that they didn’t put home.  Lake Orion tied the game 1-1 on a wrap-around goal by Thomas Reath midway through the second frame, but the Redmen answered when Ethan Phillips knocked home a powerplay goal just a few minutes later.  Late in the period, Jack Sides made it 3-1 Marquette, and then 11 seconds later,  Cooper Anderson brought the puck down straight from the faceoff and scored to make the game 4-1 Redmen.  Things didn’t calm down after that, but neither team was able to score before the end of the period, and Marquette took a 4-1 lead into the break.

The Redmen kept up the pressure to begin the third period, with lots of attacking zone pressure, and Andrew Fedrizzi extended Marquette’s lead to 5-1 about 5:00 into the frame.  Cooper Anderson netted his second of the night a few minutes later to make the game 6-1 Redmen, and Hogan Nemetz made it 7-1 shortly thereafter.  Marquette held off the Dragons for the rest of regulation, and the Marquette Redmen came away with the win by a score of 7-1.

The Marquette Redmen will next take the ice on Friday, January 31, when they face the Macomb Dakota Cougars at 4:00 P.M.  John Thomsen and Joe Gaffney will have the call, and you can catch all the action on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 and 99.9 or online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
