Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Negaunee 8-1
- Updated: February 20, 2018

Negaunee, MI – February 20, 2018 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team defeated the Negaunee Miners 8-1 on Tuesday evening in a game that was broadcast live on 103 FXD and online at wfxd.com. In the last matchup between these two rival teams, the Redmen came away with an 8-0 win at home. Now, in Negaunee, Marquette was able to pull off the season double over the Miners.
The Redmen began the game in high gear, pressing offensively and scoring the opening goal at the 4:37 mark when Tanner Phillips put the puck past Negaunee goaltender Nolan Corwin and gave Marquette the 1-0 lead. Hunter Doucette doubled the lead at 7:29 of the first, when he scored a shorthanded goal, and Rory O’Connor put Marquette up 3-0 9:03 into the period. The Miners got one goal back with 17 seconds left in the period off of a Jack Mattias goal, and after one period, Marquette led 3-1.
Negaunee responded to Marquette’s offensive pressure in the second period, and only allowed the Redmen one goal in the middle frame, coming on a powerplay. Negaunee failed to put the puck in the net during the second, and after two periods, Marquette’s lead had increased to 4-1.
The Redmen wasted no time in the third period, as Tanner Phillips scored his second goal of the night just 24 seconds after the opening puck drop to make Marquette’s lead 5-1. Gaetanno Cammarata added another goal for Marquette just under four minutes later, making the score 6-1. Marquette then scored another two goals in quick succession, one from Sterling Wright to make it 7-1 and one from Colin Gaffney which made it 8-1. Try though they might, the Redmen just couldn’t get another goal to make it a mercy rule ending, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Marquette Redmen came out the victors by a score of 8-1.
The Marquette Redmen will next hit the ice on Thursday, February 22, when they host the Calumet Copper Kings. The puck will drop on that game at 7:00 P.M., and you can catch all the action live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 or online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
