The game against the Copper Kings was Marquette’s last before going into the district playoffs, and they were able to build their momentum with a win against Calumet.
Although the game marked Marquette’s Senior Night, it was the Copper Kings that got on the board first around five minutes into the game. Calumet doubled up at the 11:08 mark, making the score 2-0, but the Redmen got one back with just under a minute left in the period courtesy of Marquette senior Joey Phillips. After one period, Calumet led 2-1.
The Copper Kings came out and played attacking hockey, but Dylan Sibilsky stood tall in the net for Marquette and didn’t allow Calumet a single goal. The Redmen, on the other hands, managed to tie the game at the 10:34 mark when Rory O’Connor fired the puck past Calumet goaltender Nick Voelker and made the score 2-2. There were no more goals scored in the second period, and after two-thirds of play had been completed, the game was knotted at two goals apiece.
The third period was a hard-fought battle, and for the majority of the final stanza, neither team managed to find an edge. Finally, at the 13:53 mark, Ethan Jones scored to put Marquette ahead 3-2 when he dumped the puck into the Calumet zone and Nick Voelker misplayed the floating puck. This was the break that the Redmen needed, and the final score was 3-2 in favor of the Marquette Redmen.
