Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Brighton 2-1 in a Back and Forth Battle
Brighton, MI – January 28, 2023 – The Marquette Redmen closed out the weekend with a big win on the road against the Brighton Bulldogs.
First period: The Marquette Redmen won the opening face off to start off Saturday afternoons game, they quickly took the puck down the ice and put a shot on net. The Redmen put a shot in the net off a rebound but it was waved off by officials because of goalie interference. Marquette’s offense started off very aggressive putting shot after shot on net and not giving the Brighton Bulldogs much of a chance with the puck. The Marquette Redmen picked up a four minute power play giving them a chance to put one on the board. Nash Riipi ripped a shot on net that beat the goalie but was denied by the crossbar keeping the game scoreless with just a few minutes left in the first. Both teams battled back and forth in the first period but neither could find the back of the net leaving the game scoreless after one.
Marquette: 0 Brighton: 0
Second period: Marquette lost the face off to start the second but quickly forced a turnover and took the puck down ice and placed a shot on net. The Brighton Bulldogs wasted no time finding the back of the net and taking the lead one minute into the second period. A few minutes after the Bulldogs goal Joe Demattia launched a rocket of a shot from near the blue line putting it in top shelf to tie the game at one. Just after the halfway mark in the second period Nash Riipi was able to get the go ahead goal for the Redmen after a well setup play. Marquette had a few more opportunities on net but they were shut down by the goal tender, each team continued to battle back and forth. The Redmen were able to shutdown the Bulldogs and came out of the second period on top 2-1.

Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Brighton 2-1 in a Back and Forth Battle
Third Period: The Marquette Redmen won the face off to kick off the third period but the bulldogs were able to force a turnover shortly after. The bulldogs picked up a power play with a controversial call in the early minutes of the third giving them the man advantage and a chance to tie up the game. Marquette was able to kill the power play opportunity and went back to full strength as they looked to extend their lead. The Redmen picked up a power play giving them an opportunity to put another one on the board and shutdown the chance of a Bulldog comeback. Brighton was able to kill the Marquette power play, keeping their hopes alive with nine minutes left to play. Marquette’s defensive efforts were strong as they only allowed Brighton two shots on goal headed into the final two minutes of play. The Marquette Redmen picked up a big win on the road against the Brighton Bulldogs with a 2-1 victory.
