Marquette Redmen Boys Basketball Defeats Gladstone Braves 66-51
- Updated: February 20, 2021

Marquette, MI – February 20, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen boys basketball team defeated the Gladstone Braves by a score of 66-51 in a Great Northern Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon to improve their record to 4-1. The Redmen, coming off a thrilling 53-45 win over Negaunee, extended their winning streak to four games with the victory.
Rane Castor of Glasdstone scored the first points of the game, but Kam Karp sunk a three-pointer moments later to give the Redmen the lead, then extended Marquette’s lead to 5-2 with a layup after a Gladstone turnover. Both the Redmen and the Braves played an up-tempo offense early on, with each team taking every opportunity they were given to drive to the basket and create defensive fouls. Karp continued to be key to Marquette’s offense, scoring 10 points in the opening frame. After the first quarter, it was Gladstone that held a 19-17 lead.

Axel Vermaat hit a three to start the second quarter for Marquette, but Gladstone answered with a two to put the Braves up 21-20. Rane Castor and Cam Ballard continued to find openings on offense for Gladstone, but Kam Karp was exceptional on both sides of the basketball, generating turnovers defensively and points offensively. Marquette rebounded well, and as a result spent a lot of time in the attacking half of the court. Thanks to an 11-0 run midway through the quarter, the Redmen held the lead at halftime by a score of 39-33.
Halftime Score: Marquette Redmen 39, Gladstone Braves 33
Marquette started the third quarter with some fireworks on offense, extending their lead to 13 points in just over two minutes of play. The Redmen played well on defense, with Ty Lotterman and Kam Karp seemingly finding every passing lane that Gladstone tried to open. Marquette outscored Gladstone 20-6 in the third quarter, and they held a 59-39 lead heading into the final frame.

Third Quarter Score: Marquette Redmen 59, Gladstone Braves 39
Marquette did not let up in the fourth quarter, although Gladstone kept pace and answered nearly every Redmen point. The Braves began to press a bit harder, and as a result committed a few fouls late, but it did not affect the outcome of the game, as Marquette had already established themselves in the driver’s seat. The Redmen were able to control the last few minutes of the game, and in the end, Marquette got the 66-51 victory over the Gladstone Braves.
The Marquette Redmen will next take the floor on Tuesday, February 23, when they will host the Escanaba Eskymos. That game is set to begin at 7:00 P.M., and you can catch all the action on 97.5 GTO and online at gto.fm.
