Marquette Redmen Basketball Defeat Sault Ste. Marie in Overtime 64-62
Sault Ste. Marie – January 20, 2023 – The Marquette Redmen were able to comeback and defeat the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils in overtime win. The Redmen ended a six game win streak that the Blue Devils were on with the Friday night win that came down to the final seconds.
First Quarter: Marquette won the opening tip in Friday nights match up against the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils but were unable to score. The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils picked up the first points of the night as they looked to build on their six game win streak. Jacob MacPhee found the first points of the night for the Redmen as the first quarter neared the halfway mark, the Blue Devils led the Redmen 7-2. The Marquette Redmen struggled to get their offensive efforts going and were held to just five points in the first quarter, the Redmen head into the second trailing by 10.
Marquette: 5 Sault Ste. Marie: 15
Second Quarter: The Blue Devils started the second quarter with possession of the ball as they looked to build on their ten point lead over the Redmen. The Redmen were able to get things going on offense as they put some points on the board shortening the Blue Devils lead as they looked to make a comeback. Marquette continued to put points on the board but the Blue Devils continued to outscore them as they trailed by 10 with three minutes to go in the second quarter. Lakenen got sent to the free throw line late in the second and made a pair of free throws to shorten the Blue devils lead to nine. Max Scott made a nice 14 footer for the blue devils bringing the lead back to double digits. With ten seconds left in the quarter Jaxon Jurmu got sent to the free throw line were he made a pair of free throws to give the Redmen a couple more points. Jack Quinnell sent the ball up to Jacob MacPhee who was able to beat the buzzer with a lay up before the teams headed to halftime.

Marquette Redmen Basketball Defeat Sault Ste. Marie in Overtime 64-62
Third Quarter: Marquette Started the second half with possession of the ball as they looked to make a comeback on the Blue Devils. Kyler Sager scored the first points of the second half with a pair of made free throws bringing the Blue devils lead down to five. The Redmens defense forced turnover after turnover on the Blue devils and scored on many of the opportunities as they were making a comeback. Jaxon Jurmu came up with a huge steal and drove it to the basket giving Marquette the lead for the first time of the night. Max Scott launched a huge three pointer that dropped bringing the blue devils back as they trailed Marquette by one. The end of the third quarter was action packed, both teams battling back and forth but Marquette came out on top as they led by three heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Marquette: 37 Sault Ste. Marie: 34
Fourth Quarter: The Marquette Redmen had a huge third quarter and they look to build on their lead in the final eight minutes of play. Jaxon Jurmu drove the ball to the basket completing the shot and drawing a foul, he made his pair of free throws at the line and expanded Marquette’s lead. The Marquette Redmen led the Blue Devils 45-43 halfway through the fourth quarter. With just under two minutes to go Carter Oshelski was able to put up a nice shot for the Blue Devils to tie the game at 48 a piece. Kyler Sager was able to find the basket and put Marquette ahead by two with 90 seconds left to play. After some back and forth action with neither teams scoring, John Gravelle was fouled and made a pair of free throws to tie the game again at 50. Marquette had the ball with 11 second’s left on the clock driving it to the basket and putting it in but the refs made a very controversial charging call giving the Blue Devils possession with six seconds to go. The Blue devils shot a big three pointer that went off the rim sending the game to overtime.
Marquette: 50 Sault Ste. Marie: 50
Overtime: Marquette won the tip to kick off overtime and Jaxon Jurmu launched a big three pointer that dropped giving Marquette three to start Overtime. Jaxon Jurmu was able to get the ball back and dropped another big three pointer, going back to back. The Marquette Redmen led by four points with two minutes left in overtime in what was a very action packed game. Kyler Sager was able to make a pair of free throws and built onto Marquette’s lead with just a minute left in overtime. The Blue Devils intentionally fouled Jaxon Jurmu who was able to make his pair of free throws giving Marquette a 60-54 lead with little time left to play. The Marquette Redmen were able to come out of overtime on top in what ended up being an action packed game.
