Marquette scored the first points of the game on a Jack Quinnell bucket off the opening tip, then jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first few minutes, causing Charlevoix to call a timeout to try and slow the Redmen down. The Rayders were able to get the momentum back on their side, and after trailing 14-2 at one point, Charlevoix pulled within three at the break.
End of First Quarter: Marquette 21, Charlevoix 18
Both teams continued their fast-paced offensive play in the second quarter, but Charlevoix’s Joe Gaffney was the standout, hitting shots from seemingly anywhere and everywhere on the floor, including four first-half three-pointers. Between Gaffney’s performance and Marquette’s balanced and effective scoring, the teams were tied at 34 at the half.
Halftime: Marquette 34, Charlevoix 34

The third quarter saw more of the same from the two high-intensity offenses, going back and forth with neither team finding a meaningful edge early on. Marquette was able to use their balanced scoring to their advantage near the end of the frame, spreading the Rayders’ defense thin and drawing fouls on Charlevoix to facilitate a 10-0 run for the Redmen. The visitors answered with a 5-0 run of their own, and heading into the fourth quarter, Marquette held a 7 point lead.
End of Third Quarter: Marquette 52-45
Marquette began to extend their lead in the final quarter, and although Charlevoix didn’t go down quietly, the Redmen established their control as the time ticked down. The Rayders began forcing shots late in the game, and Marquette did well controlling defensive rebounds and limiting second-chance opportunities for Charlevoix. In the end, the Redmen were able to pull away and record a 16 point victory.
Final Score: Marquette 65, Charlevoix 49
