Redettes Lose To TC Central 37-33

Traverse City, MIDecember 10th, 2021 – The Marquette Redettes hit the road to take on the Traverse City Central Trojans.

1Q: TC Central won the tip and scored the first points of the game thanks to Guard Catelyn Heethuis. Marquette turned the ball over on several of their first possessions of the game. After having to battle the defense of the Blue Devils from Sault Ste. Marie just a few days ago, they were once again tested by the Trojans early on. After a 5-0 start from the Trojans, the Redettes finally got on the board with a three pointer from Senior Zoe Smith. Moments later, Forward Maria Millado tied the ball game midway through the quarter. A defensive battle would sum
up the first quarter, the Trojans led 8-5 after 8 minutes of play.

2Q: The Redettes started the quarter with some free throw opportunities, Guard Sienna Lingle was able to knock one down to trail by 2. The Redettes used the half court trap in their favor in the early moments of the quarter, TC Central turned the ball over on 4 straight possessions. The Redettes scored a bucket to tie the game, but TC Central Junior Halli Warner caught fire. She scored 8 straight points including back to back three pointers. Being able to fight their way back, Marquette trailed TC Central by 1, thanks in part by Center Meghan MacPhee and Maria Millado, who scored a buzzer beater layup as the half expired. 3Q: The Trojans started the 2nd half with a 90 second opening possession that led to a three pointer from Freshman Jakiah Brumfield. Marquette struggled offensively early on in the quarter, as TC Central
continued to hit from deep. Halli Warner buried her 3rd triple of the night to give her team the 6 point lead. Maria Millado took a few trips to the free throw line and was able to make a couple, but the big play of the quarter was three pointer from Zoe Smith to cut the deficit to 2. But the Trojans answered with a three pointer of their own, Halli Warner scored her 4th of the night. After back and forth play, TC Central led 28-23 heading into the 4th quarter.

4Q: Marquette opened the quarter with a bucket from MacPhee after a beautiful feed from Millado. The early minutes of the quarter saw back and forth buckets from both teams, with just under 6 minutes to play, TC Central led by 3. Defense began to be the story in the 4th quarter as there was no score for over 4 minutes. with time winding down the Redettes relied on the Trojans missing free throws. With 60 seconds to play, Marquette was able to get a steal but could not capitalize on the offensive side of the ball. Late in the stretch, TC Central made a crucial bucket to take the 5 point lead. Marquette had a few chances very late, but could not make the comeback.
