Marquette, MI- September 30, 2022- Marquette Escapes at Homecoming against Escanaba (21-13) on Foxsports 105.1-99.1

Q1: Marquette Redmen start the game with the ball. Pete Closner start the game with a big rush to take the Redmen to the Eskymos 36-yard line. Jaxon Jurmu throws a great pass to Nate Benninger for a great catch for about 10 yards. Jurmu has trouble with the snap but is able to get a first down to put the Redmen inside the 10. Next play Jurmu throws a 12-yard touchdown to Closner. Escanaba would start their first drive of the night facing a 4th and 1 at midfield and after a fumble snap would be able to make a play and convert it. The Eskymos after another fumble go for it on 4th and 14 but would not convert, turning it over on downs. The Redmen would start their second drive after a great defensive stop. Their drive would not get off to a great start after 15-yard penalty sets them back. Jurmu has a big 40-yard run to get the Redmen inside the 20. After a couple plays Jurmu throws his second touchdown to Closner for his second touchdown catch of the night. Eskymos on their third drive they would go for it on 4th down again but would not convert again and that would end the quarter.

Q2: The Redmen would start the second quarter with the ball. Jurmu would start the quarter with a 37-yard bomb to Wyatt Lakenen. Next play Benninger would fumble the next play and Escanaba would recover. Ben Johnson would get a first down for the Eskymos to start their drive. Escanaba would decide to punt for the first time tonight. The Redmen after a great return would start where they left off before the fumble. After a few plays Marquette would miss the field goal . Escanaba would start with a 12-yard run by Johnson. Esanaba finally in Marquette territory, after a few big plays from Ben Johnson and a Casey Bray. Bray would fumble and able to recover it and dump it off to Trent Lawson for a few yards. With about 1:30 left in the second the Eskymos look to score before the half. With 30 seconds left of the half Bray would throw a 10-yard touchdown to Kaiden Brown for the first score for the Eskymos on the night. Marquette would run the ball out to take it into the second half.

Q3: Escanaba would start the second half after great drive to end the first half, having some momentum coming out of halftime. Johnson would start the first drive of the half with a 12-yard run. Eskymos would get over the 50-yard after a throw by Bray. Escanaba after a few good plays would turn the ball over on downs. Marquette would start their first drive of the half on their own 25-yard line. Tucker Welch starting the Redmen’s drive with two big runs getting Marquette close to the 50-yard line. A false start penalty cuts Marquette’s drive short and would punt it back to Escanaba. A couple plays stall’s out Escanaba’s drive and punting it back to Marquette. Marquette starts at their own 17-yard line. Benninger starts the drive with a 13-yard run. A few plays would put Marquette over the 50 in Escanaba territory.

Q4: Marquette starts the fourth in Escanaba territory. A few drop passes, Marquette punts the ball. Escanaba starts their drive with a fumble and Marquette starts inside the redzone at the 13-yard line. First play Jurmu would throw a touchdown but would be negated by a holding penalty. A couple plays later Jurmu would get his touchdown back for 20-yard reception by Benninger. It’s been Jurmu to Benninger all night. Escanaba’s next drive would start with another turnover, an interception Lakenen. Marquette began their drive on the Eskymos 33-yard line. Jurmu throws a 8-yard pass to Closner for a first down. An Escanaba personal foul puts the Redmen inside the 10-yard line. Ben Johnson comes up with a big play for Escanaba, picking off Jurmu for the first time tonight. Brown would rip off 40-yard play for the Eskymos. A 9-yard run by Johnson put the Eskymos inside the 10-yard line. Johnson would run it in to put the Eskymos back in this game but Escanaba would miss the PAT. Marquette would start the drive with 4th down but would get Escanaba to jump off sides for a new set of downs. After a few plays Marquette would go it for on fourth down to keep the clock going and convert. Marquette would just run out the clock out to end the game.
