Marquette, MI – January 7, 2025 – After an impressive 6-0 victory against Negaunee earlier this week, the Marquette High School Hockey team was eager to bring that momentum into tonight’s game against the Painesdale Jeffers Jets. The energy was electric, with the added excitement of Alumni Night as Marquette prepares for the upcoming North Hockey Showcase. Broadcasting live from Lake View Arena, Joe Gaffaney and Larry Carey delivered all the action on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9.
First Period:
Marquette started strong, with Easton Bal making the first goal of the game. The team’s energy was contagious, as Seth Sandstrom, Evan Mattila, and Easton Balcombined for a beautiful tap-in goal, extending the lead. As the first period neared its end, Connor Stade and Evan Mattila added two more goals, closing the period with a thrilling 4-0 advantage.
Score: Marquette 4 – 0 Painesdale Jeffers
Second Period:
Painesdale Jeffers came back with intensity in the second period, sneaking two goals past Marquette’s goalie, Cole Kelly. Despite the strong offensive surge from the Jets, Marquette’s defense held strong, preventing any further goals from reaching their side of the rink.
Score: Marquette 4 – 2 Painesdale Jeffers
Third Period:
The Jets came out firing in the third, scoring early and narrowing the lead. Marquette fans were on the edge of their seats, but Jack Pond lifted the spirits with a brilliant backhand pass to Brody Sheldon, who quickly scored to put the Sentinels back up. As the game neared its final minute, Brit Heinonen of Painesdale Jeffers tied the game with a late goal, pushing the match into overtime. Unfortunately, in a heartbreaking finish, the Jets scored in overtime, securing a 6-5 victory.
Final Score: Marquette 5 – 6 Painesdale Jeffers
