Marquette, MI – July 17, 2020 – The MHSAA announced today that they plan to start the 2020 Fall Sports season as traditionally scheduled, with a contingency plan and concepts in place should the season be interrupted by the spread of COVID-19.
In a press release the MHSAA stated they are “moving forward with a plan that first calls for all Fall sports to be started and played as scheduled. However, if the situation deems it necessary, the start of some or all Fall sports practices or competitions could be delayed.” The MHSAA said that some or all Fall sports could be moved or continued sometime later in the school year, with one scenario seeing Winter sports starting in November followed by the conclusion of Fall and Spring seasons potentially extending into July 2021.
These plans remain reliant on the rest of the state of Michigan progressing into Phase 5 of the MI Safe Start Plan, which allow for limited indoor activities and competitions. The U.P. is currently one of two regions in Phase 5 of the plan. There is no word on if the two regions currently in Phase 5 would be allowed to play indoor sports if the rest of the state stays in Phase 4.
