The Redmen were off to the races early in the first quarter. A quick 4-0 run put Marquette with a little lead to start. The Flivvers got on the board to make it 4-2. The Redmen followed Kingsford’s offering with an 8-0 run, including one triple each from Kam Karp and Lincoln Sager, to give Marquette the 10-point 12-2 lead.
Isaac Johnson found Collin Hicks who put up a triple to close out the first period of play. The Redmen took a 21-6 lead into the second.
The Redmen went on a 5-0 run to start the second period. The Flivvers put up a triple to respond, but Marquette stayed well out front with a 26-9 lead in the early going.
Karp sunk another triple to make it 29-13. Though the scoring was slightly more even early in the second quarter, the Redmen worked to protect their cushy lead. Marquette distanced themselves even further in the latter part of the period to take a whopping 22-point lead, the score 38-16, into the half.
The Flivvers made some headway on their deficit as they improved to 39-21 behind the Redmen early in the third period. In spite of a quieter quarter for Marquette, Kingsford outscoring them 13-9, the Redmen found little resistance on their quest for a victory over Kingsford. Marquette took a 47-29 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Redmen starters took over for the bench as the Flivvers got within 15 points early in the fourth period. Marquette previously held a more than 20-point lead through most of the second and third periods.
A Cole Bracket bucket for the Flivvers put Kingsford within 14 points. Kingsford’s Andrew Paupore followed up with a bucket of his own to put the pressure on what had only moments prior been a sure thing for the Redmen.
The Flivvers amazingly got within nine points with less than three minutes to go in the ball game. The Redmen called a timeout late in the quarter to regroup and get things back on track. Marquette was able to stave off a Flivvers comeback to clinch the 60-47 victory.
