The Sports Drive: Eric Mason & George Niemi Preview First Round Playoff Games

Marquette, MIOctober 30, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen and Ishpeming Hematites football teams are both playoff bound in 2019. The Hematites finished 7-2 and won the West PAC Iron Division, and the Marquette Redmen finished 5-4 and outright GNC champions. Both teams also have a first year head coach in Eric Mason (Marquette) and George Niemi (Ishpeming).

Coach Mason joined the show to look back on a year that saw the Redmen win their first outright GNC title since 1976. He also looks ahead to the task at hand, the Muskegon Big Reds. While coach Mason acknowledges the daunting task at hand, he views it as a big opportunity for his team.

George Niemi took over for one of the U.P.’s all-time winningest coaches, Jeff Olsen. George seamlessly followed his predecessor’s past en route to a conference title and a home playoff game. The Hematites take on Bark River-Harris, a team they defeated in Week 9 54-8. Coach Niemi joined the Sports Drive to discuss the rematch, and the season as a whole.
