Marquette Redmen Football (23) VS Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils (6) in Third Game of Season on Redmen Football Friday Night
- Updated: September 9, 2016
Marquette, Michigan – September 9th, 2015 – John Thompson and Ryan Ranguette were in Marquette for Marquette Redmen Football Night for their game against the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9FM and Simulcast for the Big Game of the Week on 103-FXD. It was the third game of the season, and the Redmen looked to take home the win. John, Pete, and Ryan brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
The game got off to a strange start when the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils attempted an on-side kick, but the Marquette Redmen were able recover the ball. On the second play of the quarter, the Blue Devils intercepted a pass from Marquette, giving them favorable field position. It was a game of pinball, as on Sault Ste. Marie’s first play, they fumbled the ball and got amazing field position at the 17-yard line. Marquette put the first points of the game on the board with a field goal, making the score 3-0 midway through the first, and that’s how the score would stay for the rest of the quarter.
The Marquette Redmen got things going early in the second quarter when they scored from 2 yards out to give the Redmen a 10-0 lead after the extra point. The rushing score capped off a 51-yard drive to start the second quarter. Sault St. Marie put together a good drive looking to answer but Marquette was able to force and recover a fumble deep in their own territory to stop the Blue Devils. Marquette took over looking to score right before the half, but the Blue Devils were able to intercept a Redmen pass and run out the rest of the time and the Redmen took a 10-0 lead into the locker rooms.
Marquette Redmen: 10
Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils: 0
The Marquette Redmen started the second quarter by kicking off to the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils, but Marquette put a quick stop to the Blue Devil’s drive. After swapping the ball back and forth a few times, the Redmen came up huge with an interception midway through the quarter. Eventually, the Redmen were able to capitalize on the Blue Devil’s mistakes, and they added seven more points to their score, making it 17-0 at the end of three quarters on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9FM and Simulcast on 103-FXD!
Early in the final quarter, Adam Jenshak came up big for the Marquette Redmen when he added an interception to his two fumble recoveries, switching control of the ball back to Marquette. They kept up the strong play when Wyatt Goodwin intercepted another Blue Devil’s pass and returned it for a touchdown, which made the score 23-0 with just under three minutes left in the game! Marquette’s kicker also had a big play when, on the kick off after the touchdown, he managed to open-field tackle the return man to prevent a runback. Eventually, Sault Ste. Marie was able to score a touchdown, but it was too little, too late, as the Marquette Redmen took home the victory.
Final Game Score:
Marquette Redmen: 23
Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils: 6
