Marquette Makes a Comeback to Defeat Menominee 28-21

Marquette, MIOctober 11, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen football team were the comeback kings in their victory against the Menominee Maroons on a soggy night at Hart Stadium on Marquette County’s Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 FXD in the Big Game of the Week.

Dizzying swings in momentum punctuated tonight’s game as Menominee charged out of the gate full steam ahead to 21-0 by the second quarter. Marquette improved to 21-7 behind the Maroons before the half. They followed that up with three in a row in the second half for a total of four unanswered scores from the second quarter on.

Friday night lights.

The first quarter saw a couple of exchanges of turnovers at the start before the first offensive strike. The Maroons forced a turnover after Marquette stopped them in their tracks and didn’t waste the opportunity. Keagan Monroe motored down the field for a gain of 47 yards down to the Marquette five. Monroe took it in shortly thereafter, and Menominee took the lead at 7-0.

Monroe followed up on Menominee’s next possession with another touchdown, carried from 28 yards out. Menominee widened their lead to 14-0 just before the end of the quarter.

Menominee’s Keagan Monroe continued to have an excellent first half with a 57-yard run into Marquette territory to start off the second quarter.

Marquette could not catch a break as the Menominee onslaught continued. Joseph Romero-Haire found Caden Bigger on a 27-yard pass through thick Marquette coverage to improve to 21-0 over the Redmen.

Brady Wright looked to inject some life into the Marquette ground game with a 21-yard run on their next possession. The Redmen followed that up with a 23-yard gain down to the Menominee 18. Marquette came through as Austin Ridl found Justin Jurmu with an 18-yard pass. The Redmen improved to 21-7 behind the Maroons with some room before the half.

Marquette’s defense had a couple of huge stops before the end of the quarter to stay within two scores of Menominee going into halftime. The Redmen took over with less than two minutes to go. A Menominee interception took away an opportunity for a last-minute score, but the Redmen held steady trailing the Maroons 21-7.

It was a Redmen victory from behind tonight at Hart Stadium.

After a disappointing first possession of the half, Marquette forced a huge turnover to take over at the Menominee 34 yard line. Brady Wright was able to punch into the end zone from three yards out after a solid drive. The Redmen improved to within one score at 21-14 behind the Maroons.

The Redmen continued to take the momentum and run with it. Literally. The home crowd went wild as Robert Apple recovered a Menominee fumble and carried the ball 40 yards to the end zone to tie up the game at 21-21.

Marquette began the fourth quarter at the Menominee 31 yard line. The Redmen took over the lead quickly as Austin Ridl found Kameron Karp for a score of 28-21 over the Maroons.

Marquette muscled their way to their 28-21 victory as the Redmen kept Menominee at bay for the rest of the game.

The Redmen will be back in action against Gladstone on Friday, October 18, 2019 on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 FXD. Pregame starts at 6:30 pm, kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
