Marquette Redmen Football Defeats Gladstone Braves 37-14
- Updated: October 18, 2019

Gladstone, MI – October 18, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen took the Gladstone Braves to task with a 37-14 victory on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 FXD in the Big Game of the Week.
Marquette proved a formidable opponent to Gladstone tonight, who were plagued with penalties and struggled to gain any semblance of a foothold on a tough Redmen defense. The victory means Marquette will take at least a share of the Great Northern Conference title.
Gladstone started with the football, but a little luck went the way of the Redmen as a Braves fumble turned it over to Marquette at the Gladstone 25 yard line. Isaac Johnson got caught in the backfield and the Redmen were set back to the 28 yard line. A penalty set them back again on their next play and the stroke of luck seemed to all but disappear.
Gladstone, however, made a costly mistake on the next play to put Marquette back in action. The Redmen did not waste their second chance. Marquette made it into the end zone and took the lead early at 7-0.
Drew Wyble began the next Redmen possession with an impressive reception for a gain of 31 yards and down at the Gladstone 24. Revisiting the end zone was not in the cards on this drive, but Wyble kicked a successful field goal from 45 yards out to improve to 10-0 early in the first quarter.
A delay-of-game penalty put things off to a rocky start on the Braves’ next possession. Gladstone’s John Hansen had a redemptive gain of 33 on a nice catch to put a little wind in their sails, though. Another penalty ultimately left the Braves a little deflated and still searching for a foothold going into the second quarter.
The Redmen started off the second quarter much like they did the first. An early 30-yard touchdown pass from Austin Ridl to Kameron Karp put Marquette at 17-0 over the Braves.
The Braves looked their best yet on their next drive just before the half. Marquette’s Isaac Johnson put a stop to that with a sack and a loss of 11 yards on the play, putting the Braves at 2nd and 21. Gladstone put up a 17-yard pass on the next play for a huge second chance. But Marquette stopped the Braves up short on downs to take over and preserve their lead headed into halftime.
The Braves saw a swing in momentum in their favor early in the second half. Gladstone recovered a fumble on Marquette’s opening possession to take over early at the Marquette 15 yard line. Gladstone’s Connor Mckenzie recovered the Braves’ own fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and a score of 17-7.
Drew Wyble started off Marquette’s next possession with a jumping catch for a gain of 27 into Gladstone territory. Marquette then came back from a sack for an electrifying 45-yard touchdown run by Brady Wright to answer Gladstone. Marquette improved to 24-7 over the Braves early in the second half.
Marquette did not let up on the Braves as things got rolling back in their favor. The Redmen quickly took over on Gladstone’s next possession. A little sloppy play put the ball back into the Braves’ hands, but Marquette’s defense stayed with Gladstone to put a stop to another Braves touchdown.
The fourth quarter began with a quick Drew Wyble field goal to put the Redmen at 27-7 over the Braves. Gladstone could not get anything going on their next possession and turned it back over to Marquette in short order. Wyble had a repeat successful field goal attempt on their next possession to put Marquette at 30-7 and under seven minutes to go.
Gladstone answered with a lightning-quick drive, thanks in large part to Cam Kelly, who punched it in from three yards out to keep some fire in the belly of the Braves. Gladstone improved to 30-14 behind the Redmen, but it was too little too late.
Marquette answered with a touchdown of their own. Austin Ridl found Drew Wyble from 49 yards out to put the Redmen at 37-14 to officially seal the deal on the night’s victory in style.
The Redmen will be back in action on Friday, October 25th against the Kingsford Flivvers at home on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 FXD. Tune in at 6:30 pm for the pregame show, kick off is at 7:00 pm.
