Marquette, MI – March 12, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team shouldered a tough 3-2 loss in overtime against the Houghton Gremlins tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Redmen and the Gremlins locked horns in the first period and there wasn’t much give either way throughout. Houghton applied a little pressure in the Marquette zone to keep the Redmen on their toes. The game remained knotted at 0-0 going into the second period.
The Redmen gifted the Gremlins a power play in the first moments of the second period. Houghton’s Kade Farrell took the opportunity and sealed the deal with the first goal of the game, their lead 1-0 with 15 minutes to go in the period.
Connor Raffaelli turned around and scored another goal for the Gremlins in short order to bring the score to 2-0.
Marquette had a chance for something to go their way with a one minute and 30-second power play. The Redmen seemed to battling against a little fatigue from yesterday’s game in addition to a plague of penalties, all called by the same referee. Houghton cleared the penalty, but some of that trademark Redmen energy seemed to creep into Marquette’s game.
Jack Sides capitalized on some of that momentum and buried the puck just before the buzzer. The Redmen improved to 2-1 behind the Gremlins going into the final period.
Evan Kroll, with help from Jacob Garrow and Brayden Grange, opened the third period with a beautiful goal to tie it up at 2-2. Both teams stayed nimble as the pace picked up. The Redmen had a couple of good looks at the Gremlin goal, but the game spilled into overtime as regulation play came to a close.
Nathan Erva of Houghton struck first in the final minutes of the eight-minute overtime period to take the victory for the Gremlins. It was a well-fought battle for the Redmen despite coming up a little short tonight.
The Redmen will be back in action against the Negaunee Miners on Thursday, March 18th on 103 WFXD. The pregame show starts at 6:30 PM, the puck drops at 7:00 PM.
