Wells, MI – November 29, 2022 – The 1-2-0 Marquette Redmen hockey team went down the road to play the 1-1-0 Escanaba Eskymos on Tuesday night at the Wells Sports Complex. John Thomsen and Joe Gaffney were live with the call on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
1st: Marquette won the Household Appliance opening face off to start the game, and brought it right down into the Escanaba zone. The Eskymos had a great scoring opportunity with a two on one against Redmen goaltender Parker Nevenhoven who made a great save. Both of the teams moved the puck around well, but neither able to fire any shots. Escanaba had a power play in the middle of the period, but the Redmen penalty kill did their job to keep the puck out of the net.
With nine minutes to go in the period Marquette was able to strike first. Caleb Fries picked up the first goal and opened the flood gates. They followed it up only a minute and half later with a goal from Jake Garrow. Escanaba continued to press into the Marquette zone, but the Redmen defense able to block passing lanes and clear the puck. Marquette went down in the Eskymo zone were able to move the puck around and create an opportunity for Ethan Phillips to score for the Redmen yet again. Escanaba couldn’t handle the constant pressure put on by Marquette, and let through the fourth goal of the period. This time by Colin Nemacheck. The Redmen scored the fifth goal of the period from Adam Heikkila. CJ Carter picked up the sixth goal in eight minutes for Marquette with help from Heikkila. Under two minutes later, Garrow picked up his second goal of the night with just five seconds to go in the period.
Marquette 7 (14 SOG) – Escanaba 0 (6 SOG)
2nd: Marquette won the face off to start the period and looked to get out of Wells Sports Complex early. Escanaba had other plans as Cale Carter found the back of the net just :24 into the period. They followed with another goal :42 into the second from Brayden Marineau. Marquette then became more diligent on defense and went back and forth with Escanaba. The Eskymos then looked to add on with a power play, but it was Marquette who had the scoring chances shorthanded. Cully Hayes held his own under pressure to keep the puck out of the net for Escanaba.
The Redmen then went on the power play and looked to add on to their lead. Marquette stayed on the gas and continued to attack the net. Cully Hayes made two big time saves, and allowed the Escanaba penalty kill to clear the puck. Escanaba then turned the tables with their third power play of the night, and turned it into a goal from Cale Carter to bring the score to 7-3. Marquette tallied up another goal with Nash Riipi finding the net this time around with the assist from Garrow.
Marquette 8 (11 SOG) – Escanaba 3 (5 SOG)
3rd: Marquette kept the streak alive winning the face off, but were put behind almost immediately by picking up a penalty. Escanaba looked to score their second power play goal of the evening. The Eskymos stayed on the attack in the Marquette zone, but the Redmen were able to effectively kill the penalty. Marquette continued to attack but the shots couldn’t find their mark.
The Redmen then had an opportunity with a penalty shot from Ethan Phillips. Phillips took his time and snapped his shot passed Hayes for the score. Tony DeMattia then followed with a stick side wrist shot that found its mark to put the Redmen up by seven yet again. CJ Carter picks up another goal and ends the night early with a mercy rule victory.
FINAL: Marquette 11 – Escanaba 3
The Marquette Redmen are on the road yet again for their next game against Saginaw Heritage on Friday December 2nd.
