Marquette, MI – January 13, 2023 – The Marquette High School hockey team faced a formidable challenge against the Howl Highlanders in a highly anticipated matchup. Joe Gaffney and special guest host Kirk Hunter were back on the call, providing the play-by-play action for fans eagerly awaiting Marquette’s quest for their 13th consecutive win.
Period 1:
The first period showcased an intense back-and-forth battle with shots and penalties from both teams. The Highlanders took risky shots, perhaps recognizing the necessity of such strategies against a strong team like Marquette. Maurier took a shot, but Highlander goalie Clay exhibited quick thinking, blocking it with his glove. Despite Marquette’s continuous advances, both teams ended the period without a goal.

Second Period:
The competition intensified in the second period, with neither team backing down. Maurier broke the deadlock by scoring stick side, putting Marquette in the lead 1-0. However, the Highlanders swiftly responded, sneaking the puck past Marquette’s goalie and tying the score at 1-1. The pace escalated, with both teams seizing opportunities, but it was Brendan Mitter of the Highlanders who made a surprising play with just 3 seconds left, catching Marquette off guard.

Third Period:
The third period opened with a hard work short-handed goal from Reepy, tying the score at 2-2. Nash Reepy and Sheldon elevated Marquette with a perfect opening, burying the puck and bringing the score to 3-2. The Highlanders answered back, leveling the score once again at 3-3. The game entered overtime with tensions high.
Overtime:
In a thrilling overtime, Marquette’s Bluche emerged as the hero, securing a 4-3 victory. This triumphant win marked Marquette’s 13th consecutive victory of the season, showcasing their resilience and determination on the ice.
