Trenton, MI – January 30, 2025 – Marquette High School Hockey hit the road today, traveling to Trenton, Michigan to compete in the MIHL Showcase at Kennedy Ice Arena. The Sentinels faced off against the Riverview Gabriel Richard Pioneers, coming in fired up after last weekend’s win over Escanaba and ready to keep that momentum rolling. Fans tuned in live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9, where Joe Gaffaney and Coach Larry Carey delivered play-by-play coverage of every moment.
First Period
Marquette came out flying, bringing the same energy that powered them through Escanaba last week and getting the first puck on net early. While the Pioneers tried to push play into the Marquette zone, the Sentinels did an excellent job controlling the neutral zone and keeping Riverview from setting up any clean, close shots. That control paid off, as Marquette High School Hockey struck first and held strong defensively for the remainder of the period, keeping the Pioneers off the scoreboard.
Score:
Marquette 1 – 0 Riverview Gabriel Richard
Second Period
The Sentinels wasted no time building on their lead. A hard-working shift from Jack Pond and Cody Beerling resulted in a cleanly executed line goal, giving Marquette a two-goal advantage. With the wind firmly in their sails, Marquette played on their toes, and when this team plays on their toes, they are tough to beat. Just two minutes later, Skylar Blackburn fired a shot that left a loose puck in front, and Trey Savala capitalized instantly, burying it before the Pioneer goalie could react. The momentum continued with a power-play goal from Skylar Blackburn, assisted by Caleb Aho, as Marquette High School Hockey dominated the period and widened the gap.
Score:
Marquette 3 – 0 Riverview Gabriel Richard
Third Period
Marquette showed no signs of slowing down in the final period. The play stayed tight and competitive, with chances at both ends. Mandala came close with a strong shot, and the Sentinels continued to apply pressure while staying disciplined defensively. Late in the period a marquette player was able to sneak one into the net but due to it possibly being an icing it wasn’t counted. After review, officials confirmed the puck had crossed the line while in the marquette players control, so the goal was added back to the board, extending Marquette’s lead. With just 1:40 remaining, Marquette found the back of the net once again with Trey Savala making his second goal of the game, sealing the shutout and sending Marquette into the weekend on a high note victory!
Final Score:
Marquette 4 – 0 Riverview Gabriel Richard
