Hancock, Michigan 9/18/2020 – The first Friday night of U.P. Varsity High School Football commenced on Friday Night at 7pm. A tradition that is decades in the making. This season, however, is unlike any other. Football was on, then it was off, and then it was back on again. With only two weeks to prepare and a starting quarterback falling to injury days before the first game, the Gwinn Modeltowners had just a touch more adversity on their side of the ball.

GHS was lead defensively by #55 Reid Hill and #13 Mastin Love. Gwinn looked promising on the first few possessions causing Hancock to go punt a couple of times. The Bulldog defense caused multiple turnovers deep in Modeltowner territory, and returned an interception for a touchdown. Gwinn’s defense had a short field most of the first half ending the score 40 – 0.

The bulldogs were led by #1 Connor LeClaire, #14 Austin Salani, #44 Cole Stuber, and #60 Rudy Bekkala. Offensively, the bulldogs had a couple of big plays through the air and ground. Defensively, they were able to take advantage of the GHS quarterback situation, put some points on the board, and give their offense a very short field to work with.  Gwinn was able to put some points on the board, but not enough as Hancock won 43 to 6.  Gwinn hopes to bounce back next week, as they take on a tough Calumet team in Calumet on Friday night.
