Marquette, MI – September 2nd, 2026 – On this week’s episode of The Big Local Sports Show, we were joined by Negaunee Miners softball standout, Aly Robar, who is coming off an impressive sophomore season and is now entering her junior year at Negaunee High School.
We kicked off the show by getting to know Aly and learning more about her journey in sports. Before making softball her primary focus, Robar tried several different sports growing up before eventually shifting her attention and talents toward the diamond. That decision has certainly paid off.
During her sophomore season with the Miners, Robar earned 2026 WestPAC Pitcher of the Year honors while also being named to the All-Region and All-District Team. She also put together two complete-game shutouts, including a dominant one-hit performance against Kingsford in the district championship game. Robar helped lead Negaunee to a 3-0 victory over the Flivvers to capture the district championship.
During the first segment, Robar gave us an inside look at what it was like growing up with both of her parents coaching her, the different equipment she has used throughout her career, and the various teams she has had the opportunity to play for. We also talked about her development as a player and how those early experiences helped shape the softball player she is today.
In the second segment, we shifted the conversation toward Robar’s next step in her softball career. Robar recently earned a spot on the Finesse Fastpitch 16U softball team, giving her the opportunity to travel across the country and compete against some of the top competition in the nation. The upcoming season will provide Robar with opportunities to showcase her talents in front of college coaches as she works toward one of her biggest goals, playing softball at the next level.
Robar also shared some of the connections she has already made in the college softball world, including a connection to the Notre Dame Women’s Softball program, along with several other interesting stories from her journey. With a busy travel schedule ahead, Robar will have plenty of opportunities to continue developing her game and putting her name on the radar of college programs.

A Negaunee High School graduate, Mattson stayed in the Upper Peninsula to begin his college basketball career at Bay College. During his two seasons with the Norse, Mattson helped the team compile a 39-20 record and win two conference championships. During his sophomore season, he started 23 games and served as a team captain. He graduated from Bay College and then transferred to Finlandia University to finish his collegiate career. Now, Mattson returns to NMU as part of Keil Ganz’s coaching staff.
