The Marquette Redmen Hockey Team(4) Faces Off With the Kingsford Flivers(2) for the Big Game of the Week on Fox Sports Marquette and 103-FXD
- Updated: December 22, 2016

Marquette, MI – December 22nd, 2016 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team was back on the air for the Big Game of the Week against the Kingsford Flivers. Marquette had an up and down start to the year, but they were looking strong coming into the game. They were the first to get onto the scoreboard off of a great give and go from the Phillips brothers with just over three minutes gone from the clock. The game looked to be firmly in Marquette’s control, and they added another goal from Spencer S. at 6:51 in the first. Marquette failed to clear the puck out of their zone, and at 9:19 gone from the first, the Flivers got onto the scoreboard, making it 2-1. Tanner Phillips got his second goal of the game on another feed from Joey Phillips, giving Marquette back their two-goal advantage. Right before the first period ended, Marquette committed a penalty, and that would give Kingsford a chance right as the first came to a close.
First Period Score:
Marquette Redmen: 3
Kingsford Flivers: 1
It was a great first period for the Marquette Redmen, however, they started the second by killing the end of a penalty from the first period. Marquette was having some real trouble dealing with the Flivers in the second period, and they had another penalty five minutes into the second. The first shot on goal for Marquette came at an astonishing eight minutes into the period, and Kingsford seemed to have found the Redmen’s number. With just over four minutes left to go, Marquette found themselves down two players for about 40 seconds, and that allowed the Flivers to close the gap to one goal, making the score 3-2. Marquette stopped any further scoring chances during the rest of the second, and they went into the locker rooms looking to improve in the third period.
Second Period Score:
Marquette Redmen: 3
Kingsford Flivers: 2
Marquette found their life in the locker rooms during the second intermission, but the game was far from over. The Marquette Redmen had all of the penalties in the game in the first two periods, and the refs were paying close attention to not let the play get out of hand. It was a scary third period for the Redmen, and with just over eight minutes left in the game, their lead was still a single point. Kingsford got their first penalty of the game at seven minutes left in the third, but Marquette wasn’t able to add a security goal to their total, ensuring it would be a nail-biter of a game. Kingsford pulled their goalie with about 1.5 minutes left, and that allowed Marquette to score an empty-net goal, solidifying their win.
Final Game Score:
Marquette Redmen: 4
Kingsford Flivers: 2
