MHSAA’s Geoff Kimmerly Gives Mid-Summer Update on Michigan High School Athletics
- Updated: June 23, 2020

Marquette, MI – June 23, 2020 – Two weeks ago today the MHSAA released their MHSAA Summer Guidance Update #2 which outlined new guidelines for regions 6 (Northwest Lower Peninsula) and 8 (Upper Peninsula) after Governor Gretchen Whitmer moved those regions into Phase 5 of the MI Safe Start Plan.
Today Geoff Kimmerly of the MHSAA joined Luke Ghiardi to give an update on current guidelines for athletes in the U.P. and across the state, and to get into how the MHSAA process will proceed moving forward.
The MHSAA has worked closely with multiple offices around the state, including the Governor’s Office, the Department of Education, and the National Federation Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. Kimmerly mentioned that each sport is being evaluated on a 3-point risk scale. 1 being low, 2 being moderate, and 3 being high in terms of transmission risk.
When it comes to a potential deadline on a decision whether a particular sport can happen, Kimmerly says they have not set any, and are optimistic the entire state of Michigan will be into Stage 5 of the MI Safe Start Plan at some point in July. Kimmerly also said that while they would prefer to play the seasons as they are currently scheduled, it is potentially possible to move schedules around as a last resort.
