Wimbledon 2025

Marquette, MI – July 3, 2025 – This year’s Wimbledon recorded its hottest opening day, reaching a scorching 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Players were permitted a ten-minute break when switching sides, rather than the usual one or two minutes. In a historic change, this year’s tournament marked the first time in 148 years that line judges were eliminated in favor of electronic line calls.

On the women’s side of the tournament, four of the top five ranked players were eliminated early, leaving only the top-ranked player, Aryna Sabalenka, still in contention. This is the first time in the Open Era two of the top three women have lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament. Barbora Krejcikova, the defending champion for the women, got a little scare yesterday as she played Alexandra Eala. With many of the top-seeded women out early, Krejcikova has a better chance to repeat.

In the men’s tournament, only 19 seeded players advanced to the second round, marking the second fewest at a major since the current seeding format was introduced in 2011. Carlos Alcaraz, the number two-ranked player, is aiming to make it three championships in a row this year. He is coming off a victory against the number one-ranked Jannik Sinner at the French Open, where he came back after being down two sets to none.

The championships are scheduled for next weekend, with the women’s events on Saturday and the men’s events on Sunday. If you watch the broadcast, you’ll have the opportunity to see many celebrities, as Wimbledon is known for attracting star-studded attendees like John Cena who was present to support Carlos Alcaraz in his recent match.
