Marquette MI, – August 19th, 2025 – Today marks the official beginning of the 2025 U.S. Open Mixed Doubles tournament. The tournament, which was formerly known as the U.S. National Championship, has been held since 1982. The field consists of sixteen teams that will battle for a chance to take home $1 million in prize money. The teams will do something players are not used to if they win their opening match, the teams will play another match the same day.
This year, the U.S Open decided to move the start date of the mixed doubles up five days, rather than beginning it in the traditional second week of the major, which interferes with the singles play. That decision worked perfectly, as many of the top players in the world decided to play. It will feature the world’s top 10 male players and nine of the top 12 female players. It will also feature Venus Williams at age 45, who will be the oldest competitor in decades, since Renee Richards set the record at 47 in 1981.
The scoring will be a little different as well. Best of three set matches with short set to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four all, and a 10-point tiebreaker if the third set is needed. The championship will feature a best-of-three sets match to six games, still no-ad scoring, and with a tiebreaker at six all, or if a third set is needed.
You can catch the live tennis today on ESPN2 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and ESPN News today from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can find the championship and semi-finals being played on ESPN tomorrow from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
