Marquette, MI – July 31, 2019 – High school football practice is a little over a week away, and two programs have new head coaches eagerly awaiting their first year. marquette’s Eric Mason and Ishpeming’s George Niemi could barely contain their excitement when they joined the Sports Drive today.
Eric Mason takes over for Dave L’Huillier who stepped down after a GNC Championship season and just missing out on the postseason. Coach Mason has been the Freshman head coach and varsity assistant for a number of years at Marquette. He acknowledged the changes and difficulties in becoming the head coach, but feels he has a great staff and some great kids in 2019.
George Niemi takes over for long-time and three-time state champion Jeff Olson at Ishpeming. Coach
Niemi talked a lot about putting in the work every day and how he and his staff continue to keep the ball rolling and hit the ground running. Niemi a long time assistant under Olson knows the program is in a strong state and has a good foundation, and he looks to keep the success at Ishpeming going.
