Marquette, MI – January 23, 2020 – The Gwinn community was hit with a major tragedy on Thursday night with the sudden unexpected passing of head football coach Dion Brown. Coach Brown was always the most upbeat and enthusiastic person when he talked about his team on the Sports Drive, and those thoughts have been echoed by many. The man that was never without his signature smile.
The Sports Drive remembered coach Brown today. Friends, colleagues, and players all weighed in on the passing and also painted the picture of who he was as a man. Ben Olsen coached with Dion Brown in Gwinn on the football sidelines and over the years turned into very good friends. Olsen talked about the impact Brown had on him, the kids, and the community, and what comes next for Gwinn.
Dion got his start in coaching with the Ishpeming Hematites under then head coach Jeff Olsen. During his time there he also coached alongside Dan Waterman and Scott Syrjala. He remained friends and talked often with all of these guys. Jeff, Dan, and Scott all talked at length about the man the U.P lost.
The Sports Drive was lucky enough to talk football many times over the years with Coach Brown. There were many great memories from those interviews that were relayed on the Sports Drive’s tribute to Dion.
