Marquette, MI – August 25th, 2025 – Munising High School will honor Terry Sayen this week by renaming its football field after him. Alumni are invited to Thursday’s celebration and welcome on the field to help celebrate as the community pays tribute between the JV and Varsity football games versus North Central.
Sayen is renowned for his remarkable twenty-six seasons as head coach, during which he led the football team to 137 wins and 72 losses. His standout achievement came in 1980, guiding the Mustangs to the Class C State Final. Additionally, Sayen made significant contributions by coaching basketball, track, and golf, helping to shape Munising High School’s athletic programs. He also served as athletic director for twelve years.
Before coaching, Sayen was a standout athlete at Gwinn High School, excelling in basketball and track, and setting high jump and long jump records. During Sayen’s coaching career, he won many awards. He was named U.P. Coach of the Year and State Class C Coach of the Year, after leading his team to the State title game. The following year, he won the Midwest Coaching Award. In 1997, he was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Finally, in 2012, he would get inducted into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.
The field dedication honors Sayen’s accomplishments and solidifies his legacy for generations to come.
