Marquette, MI – June 15th, 2026 – This past Friday, the Jeffers Jets made history. After defeating Norway in the regional final, Jeffers advanced to East Lansing for the first state semifinal appearance in program history. The win not only secured a trip to Michigan State University’s McLane Stadium, but also cemented the 2026 team as the first baseball squad in school history to reach the MHSAA Division 4 state semifinals.
A major reason for the Jets’ postseason success was their explosive offense. Jeffers scored at least 10 runs in all five of its playoff victories, overwhelming opponents with a lineup that featured a mix of veteran leadership and emerging young talent. Senior Brogan Turner led the way both at the plate and on the mound, batting .424 with 26 runs scored, 31 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases while posting a perfect 4-0 record and a 1.66 ERA as a pitcher. Sophomore Blake Heltunen hit .458 and stole 22 bases, while freshman shortstop Carson L’Esperance emerged as another key contributor with a .372 batting average. Junior catcher Pierce Johnson added a .326 average, scored 24 runs, swiped 17 bases, and earned three victories on the mound.
Standing between Jeffers and a state championship game was Marcellus, and Eastern Kentucky commit, Cale Hackenberg. The Wildcats’ ace proved to be the difference, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one walk over seven innings of work. The Jets were unable to get their offense going against Hackenberg and the Marcellus pitching staff, falling 4-0 in their first appearance on the state’s biggest stage.
Despite the loss, Jeffers’ postseason run marked a historic achievement for the program and capped off one of the most successful seasons in school history. In his first season as head coach, Joe Romano guided the Jets to heights never before reached by the baseball program. Romano is no stranger to postseason success, having led the Jeffers girls basketball team to a Class D state runner-up finish in 1994. Following the semifinal loss, Romano reflected on what his team accomplished.
“Our kids don’t have anything to hang their heads about,” Romano said. “You got to keep your head high. This is a big achievement for Jeffers High School, and hopefully in the near future we’ll come back.”
While the season ended one win short of a state championship appearance, the future remains bright for the Jets. They graduate four seniors, who played major roles in the historic run, but much of the team’s core returns next season. Romano believes the foundation is already in place for another successful campaign.
“I think we still got a good core,” Romano said. “I think we’ll be okay. I think we can still run with some teams. You know, we’ll just keep going. I’ll be here at Jeffers until they tell me to get lost.”
Although the final result didn’t go the Jets’ way, the 2026 season will be remembered as the year Jeffers baseball broke new ground, reaching the state semifinals for the first time and setting a new standard for future generations of Jets baseball.
