Jannik Sinner Defends Wimbledon Crown

Wimbledon

Marquette, MI – July 13th, 2026 – The curtain closed on another unforgettable Wimbledon Championship this weekend as the world’s best players spent two weeks battling on the sport’s grandest stage for one of the most prestigious trophies in athletics. Since its inception in 1877, Wimbledon has stood as the oldest tennis tournament in the world and remains the sport’s most iconic event. With its historic grass courts, strict all-white dress code, and traditions unlike any other major championship, lifting the Wimbledon trophy represents the pinnacle of professional tennis.

One of the biggest storylines entering the tournament surrounded two-time champion, Carlos Alcaraz. After finishing runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, the Spaniard was forced to miss this year’s Championships because of the same wrist injury that also sidelined him during the French Open. His absence marked the second consecutive Grand Slam tournament he was unable to compete in, leaving one of the sport’s biggest stars watching from the sidelines instead of contending for another major title.

World No. 1, Jannik Sinner, arrived in London with a chance to successfully defend the Wimbledon title he captured a year ago. His quest for back-to-back championships, however, got off to a difficult start. Facing Miomir Kecmanović in the opening round, Sinner found himself trailing two sets to one while battling through a painful foot injury that left him bleeding through his shoes. The gritty performance raised questions about whether the defending champion would be healthy enough to make another deep run. Sinner quickly put those concerns to rest. After surviving the opening-round scare, the Italian elevated his game to another level, not dropping another set the rest of the tournament until the championship match. He defeated Nuno Borges, Jenson Brooksby, Shintaro Mochizuki, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Novak Djokovic to earn a return trip to Centre Court for his second consecutive Wimbledon final.

Standing between Sinner and another championship was Alexander Zverev, who entered the final full of confidence after winning the French Open earlier this season; his first major title of his career. The championship match lived up to the hype. Zverev edged Sinner in a thrilling opening-set tiebreak, winning 7-6 (9-7) to seize the early advantage. Rather than let the match slip away, Sinner answered with the composure expected from the world’s top-ranked player. He responded by taking the second-set tiebreak 7-6 (7-2), completely swinging the momentum in his favor.

From there, Sinner took control. Using his powerful baseline game, pinpoint serving, and relentless consistency, the Italian claimed the final two sets to complete the comeback and secure a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. The win gave Sinner his second consecutive Wimbledon championship, further cementing his place among the sport’s elite. In doing so, he joined an exclusive group of players to successfully defend the Wimbledon men’s singles title, including Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz.

The victory also continued Sinner’s dominance over one of his biggest rivals. He has now defeated Zverev in 10 consecutive meetings, strengthening his commanding edge in one of the ATP Tour’s premier rivalries. During that stretch, Sinner has also held serve in an incredible 84 consecutive service games against the German.

With Wimbledon now complete, the tennis calendar shifts to its final Grand Slam event of the season. The world’s best players will next head to New York for the U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where play is scheduled to begin on Aug. 23 and conclude on Sept. 13. After successfully defending his Wimbledon crown, Sinner will once again arrive at the season’s final major as the player everyone else will be trying to beat.
