Marquette, MI – August 1st, 2025 – Last night, the 2025 NFL preseason kicked off with fans gathering in Canton, Ohio, for the Hall of Fame Game. The Detroit Lions were led by quarterback Kyle Allen, while the Los Angeles Chargers were guided by former number-three draft pick, Trey Lance. Both teams opted to keep many of their starters on the sidelines, allowing other players to compete for roster spots.
The Lions didn’t have an ideal start, fumbling the opening kickoff. This mistake opened the door for Trey Lance to throw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Will Dissly. The Chargers jumped to an early lead and maintained their momentum throughout the game. Their defense had an outstanding night, forcing five turnovers. Ultimately, the Chargers won the game decisively (34-7). Trey Lance had an impressive performance, completing 13 of 20 passes with 120 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Lions debuted their new coordinators, John Morton on offense and Kelvin Sheppard on defense.
During the game, four players were recognized for their induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, and Sterling Sharpe. Eric Allen enjoyed a successful fourteen-season career in the NFL, earning six Pro Bowl selections. Jared Allen recorded over 136 career sacks in twelve seasons, placing him among the all-time leaders. Despite playing only seven seasons, Sterling Sharpe, a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, will become the first Hall of Famer to join a sibling, his brother Shannon Sharpe was inducted in 2011. Lastly, Antonio Gates, who never played a snap in college football and had an incredible sixteen-year run, earns a gold jacket. He holds the NFL record for the most touchdown receptions by a tight end, with 116.
