Marquette, MI – February 19th, 2026 – This past week, we received the heartbreaking news that Kathleen Ellen Andel passed away at the age of 79.
Born in Monterey, California, Kathy spent her early years in Calumet, Michigan. She later attended Northern Michigan University, earning her Associate’s degree, the beginning of what would become a lifelong devotion to the university and its community.
For 27 consecutive years, Kathy attended every home football game, becoming a beloved and familiar presence on the sidelines. Dressed in green and gold spray paint and her signature feather boa, her passion for the Wildcats was impossible to miss.
But Kathy didn’t just attend games, she supported the athletes wholeheartedly. She baked cookies for countless players, earning affectionate nicknames such as “Cookie Lady,” “Team Grandma,” and “Team Mom.” She formed especially close bonds with the men’s soccer team, particularly the international players, many of whom lovingly referred to her as their “American Grandma.” Kathy welcomed them as family, and they became an important and cherished part of her life.
In her later years, Kathy was able to fulfill several lifelong dreams. In 2023, she proudly played the cymbals during the national anthem with the NMU marching band, a moment she treasured deeply.
Though she may no longer be with us, Kathleen Ellen Andel’s spirit will forever echo through the stands, cheering on her Northern Michigan Wildcats. If you’d like to learn more about Kathleen Ellen Andel, click this link to find her Obituary.
