Marquette, MI – May 30, 2017 – Marquette Senior High School Athletic Director Alex Tiseo stopped by the Morning Sports Drive to talk about his hectic week upcoming with spring sports winding down. The Marquette baseball/softball teams will be in Alpena later this week for their district tournament. Marquette sends their track teams to the UP Finals in Kingsford this week as well. And on top of all of that, Marquette is hosting the boys and girls golf UP Finals. The Boys finals will be held at Heritage Golf Course while the girls will be playing at the NMU Course, Chocolay Downs.
The Pittsburgh Penguins took a 1-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final over the Nashville Predators with a 5-3 victory. Pittsburgh started hot, scoring 3 goals in the first period and took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Nashville’s defense came out tough in the 2nd period and did not allow Pittsburgh to get a shot on goal over the next 37 minutes. This allowed Nashville to eventually tie the game at 3-3 in the 3rd period. But after not getting a shot on goal in 37 minutes, the next shot on goal for Pittsburgh went in. Jake Guentzel fired a shot from just across the blue line that got by Pekka Rinne with just 3:17 remaining on a goal that proved to be a game-winner.
In baseball action, the Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals 10-7 last night. After going up 6-3, the Tigers squandered the lead over the next two innings, but scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning to take Game 1 of a 3-game series from the Royals. The Brewers dropped the first game of a 3-game series against the New York Mets 4-2. The Brewers are still in first place in the NL Central.
Bryce Harper charged the mound and eventually started a brawl between the Washington Nationals and the San Fransisco Giants after being plunked by Giant’s pitcher Hunter Strickland.
