Marquette, MISeptember, 7 2018The Marquette Redmen hosted the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils  in the third game of the 2018 season. Marquette was 0-2 going into this match-up and sought their first win of the season. The Blue Devils were 1-1 but around this time last year the Redmen were victorious over Sault Ste. Marie.

The Redmen were off to the races as the first touchdown of the game belonged to Marquette. A beautiful pass from quarterback Brendan Kaski to wide receiver Ethan Martysz brought the score to 7-0 with the extra point. On the next drive Marquette put a stop to the Blue Devils and regained possession quickly. Kaski found Martysz again with another touchdown on their second possession for a score of 13-0; the extra point was no good. The Blue Devils kept the Redmen at bay at the end of the first quarter with no change to the scoreboard.

The second quarter started out with a Sault Ste. Marie possession. Blue Devils quarterback Jakob Davie fumbled two snaps in a row but Robert Landis found the end zone on the next play with a touchdown from 7 yards out. The Redmen blocked the extra point to keep the score at 13-6. The Blue Devils’ James Huskey intercepted a Kaski pass on Marquette’s next possession to allow Kristopher Pearce to score from 10 yds out. The two-point conversion was successful to steal the lead from Marquette 14-13. Marquette’s Kameron Karp put the Redmen right back in the game with a kick return to the 41 yard line. Robert Apple brought it up to the 16 yard line just a few moments later with a solid run. It was Alex Cannoot who caught a Kaski pass from 12 yards out to put Marquette back on top. The Redmen answered the Blue Devil’s two-point conversion with a successful attempt of their own bringing the score up to 21-14. The Blue Devils put the pressure on the Redmen in the final minutes of the second quarter with a near touchdown but were thwarted as Marquette held their lead going into the half.

Marquette took over possession to start out the second half of the game.  The Redmen didn’t waste any time as Apple had a huge gain of 28 yards to bring it into Blue Devil territory. On the next play Kaski threw a 40-yard pass to Martysz who easily cruised into the end zone to bring the score up to 28-14 right out of the gate. Sault Ste. Marie struggled to make anything happen on their next possession. The Redmen had no trouble though, with another Kaski/Martysz special. Kaski’s 35-yard pass brought the score up to 35-14 with a successful kick from Drew Wyble. Brady Wright had a huge tackle during the next Blue Devils possession to defend the Redmen lead. Marquette’s defense stayed strong and the rest of the quarter passed with no change to the scoreboard.

Marquette started the final quarter of the game trying to shut Sault Ste. Marie out of the game. The Redmen did just that as Brady Wright leapt over the competition and into the end zone from the 3-yard line for a score of 42-14. The Blue Devils’ Tate Kay answered the Redmen with a 56-yard touchdown run. After a close but unsuccessful two-point conversion the score settled at 42-20. The Redmen held the Blue Devils and the final minutes of the game ticked away as Marquette easily protected their first victory of the season.
