Redmen Football Crushes Copper Kings 28-6 in Last Regular Season Game
- Updated: October 23, 2020

Calumet, MI – October 23, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity football team defeated the Calumet Copper Kings 28-6 tonight in their final regular season game on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 WFXD.
The Redmen battled more snow this week in addition to the Copper Kings in Calumet this evening. The game started with Marquette well within striking distance on their first possession.
However, the Copper Kings’ defense and the sloppy conditions kept the Redmen from striking early. Ethan Richards brought it down to the Calumet five-yard line, but a touchdown was thwarted by the Copper Kings. The Kings were able to stave off a Redmen score in spite of the Redmen arriving at the three-yard line, Marquette unable to punch it in.
Austin Ridl found Owen Beauchamp with a beautiful throw to get the Redmen into enemy territory with less than two minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Redmen would start the second quarter fourth and four at the Calumet 30-yard line. Kam Karp racked up 20 yards on the first play. He was taken down at the 10-yard line. Austin Ridl then took it upon himself to make the 10-yard touchdown run for an early Redmen score. The kick was good and Marquette took the lead at 7-0 over Calumet.
Ty Lotterman came up with a huge block on a Calumet punt to give the Redmen great field position for their next drive. Ridl wasted no time as David Eberhard received his 30-yard touchdown throw, the score improving to 14-0.
Calumet looked to answer quickly, and that they did. Two plays and 40 yards and the Copper Kings found the end zone to slash the Marquette lead to 14-6.
The Redmen responded in kind on their next drive. Ridl again found Eberhard on a 45-yard touchdown pass to bring the Marquette lead to 21-6 as halftime inched closer.
A late fumble from the Copper Kings was recovered by Marquette at the Calumet 20-yard line, but the promise of a quick touchdown was quickly extinguished. The Redmen were plagued with penalties and then an interception in the end zone as the Copper Kings managed to hold the score at 21-6 behind Marquette going into halftime.
The second half didn’t have much going in the early minutes, but things got interesting in short order. Ridl shook the defenders on their second possession of the quarter and took it to the house on a 53-yard touchdown run. The Redmen improved to 28-6 with more than seven minutes to go in the third quarter.
Marquette’s defense showed up in spades as usual. Chris Ricker came up with a huge blocked pass and Ethan Richards nabbed an interception on the next play. Richards turned on the jets and ran the other way, getting Marquette down to the Calumet 40-yard line. The Redmen could not convert on the opportunity, but the Redmen would carry their considerable lead into the final quarter of play.
The score held steady as the minutes ticked down in the fourth quarter. The Marquette victory became a certainty as hope ran out with the clock for the Copper Kings. The Redmen finished the regular season with their 28-6 victory, going 5-1 overall.
