Redmen Basketball Clinches 69-61 Victory Against Brighton

Marquette, MI – December 13, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Basketball team clinched a 69-61 victory over the Brighton Bulldogs on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Bulldogs struck first early in the opening quarter. It was a bit of call and response in the early going with the Bulldogs consistently out front by a point or two.
Then Ty Lotterman put up a two-pointer to put the Redmen at 7-6, trailing Brighton by one. A quick turnover gave Kam Karp the opportunity to sink a three-pointer to give the Redmen their first lead at 9-7.
Brighton took back the lead at 13-12 late in the quarter. A couple of Drew Wyble free throws gave the Redmen the 14-13 lead briefly with just 30 seconds to go. Ryan Opre of Brighton put up a two-pointer at the last second, however, to put the Bulldogs back out in front at 15-14 just before the buzzer.
The second quarter saw the Bulldogs pull away with a five-point lead. A quick 5-0 run from the Redmen tied it back up at 21-21. The Bulldogs responded quickly to retake the lead, but the lead was quickly slashed by Marquette as the Redmen stayed within striking distance throughout the first half.
Brighton pulled away with a 7-point lead late in the quarter at 34-27. A Justin Jurmu three- and then two-pointer in short order slashed that lead to just 34-32 going into the half.
Kam Karp opened up the second half by tying up the game at 34-34. The game remained tight as the Redmen and the Bulldogs played hot potato with the lead.
Ty Lotterman helped tie things up at 46-46 with a three off the bench and 30 seconds to go. Brighton regained the lead, however, at 48-46 just before the buzzer.
The fourth quarter had Marquette staying within striking distance early on. Drew Wyble grabbed the lead for the Redmen with a couple of successful free throws at 51-50. Marquette had a 4-0 run to cultivate a 5-point lead, their largest in the game thus far.
John Thomsen help seal a 9-point Redmen lead with a massive triple with three minutes to go. Marquette maintained as the game clock ticked down. The Redmen pulled out front and held on to the lead when it mattered to clinch their first victory of the season.
The Redmen will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, December 14th on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Tune in at 1:00 pm for pregame, tip-off is at 1:30 pm.
