Marquette, MIJanuary 14, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team took home a 55-48 victory against the Escanaba Eskymos tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redettes took on the Eskymos for only their second home game of the season. Marquette started the game riding a six-game winning streak, hoping to make it seven.

Marquette started the game with the early 4-0 lead, staying out front at 6-2 with four minutes to go. The Redettes’ signature defensive game was out in full force against the offensively gifted Escanaba team early in the quarter. The Eskymos were able to use that offensive game to battle back, however, and briefly gain the lead after an Aubrey Weber triple to make it 8-6.

The Redettes responded in kind to tie it up, but the Eskymos jumped back out ahead at 10-8. Escanaba seemed to be adjusting to Marquette’s defense as the quarter progressed, making this a much closer match-up than the early-going let on. The score was 13-10, Escanaba in the lead, going into the second period.

Maria Millado started off the second period with a double to cut the Escanaba lead to one. Millado followed that up with a defensive rebound and then another bucket to give Marquette the 14-13 lead. Reegan Ketzenberger hit a triple to round out a 7-0 run for the Redettes.

The Redettes’ victory tonight is their 7th in a row!

Later,  Aspen Michelin got the lay up, followed by another Millado bucket to extend their lead to 21-15 with over three minutes to go.

Escanaba was gaining on the Redettes with just a 21-17 deficit, but a Rayna Warchock triple helped Marquette improve to 24-17. The Eskymos did not just fade away as they put up another late scoring run. The Redettes hung on to a 24-23 lead going into halftime.

Maddie Carter, with assistance from Ketzenberger, opened up the second half with a double to improve to 26-23. Taylor Ray of Escanaba rained on that parade with an immediate answer, sinking a tripled to tie it up at 26-26. The Eskymos were able to get back out front at 28-27, their first lead since the first quarter.

Escanaba took the lead and ran with it on a little scoring run to put the score at 36-29. Marquette struggled to regain control, but were able to slash that deficit to 36-33 with just under two minutes to go. Millado went two for two at the line to make it 36-35 as Marquette looked to best Escanaba in the final quarter of the game.

Escanaba started the fourth period improving to 39-36 over the Redettes. Marquette battled back to within one point, their greatest enemy their low scoring percentage at the line it seemed. Millado found Sofia van den Ende who put it up for two and briefly regained the lead for the Redettes.

Marquette and Escanaba took turns with the lead for a spell, but Maddie Carter continued her stellar night with an and one opportunity to give the Redettes a 49-46 lead with a little over two minutes to go.

With a one point lead Marquette let the clock run down, managing their time and then gaining some success at the line when it mattered most. The Redettes solidified a seven-game winning streak with their 55-48 victory tonight.
