The Copper Kings got things started with a couple of triples from Jana Loukus and Elli Djerf to put Calumet out front with a 6-2 lead. It didn’t take long for the Redettes to tie it up at 6-6, and it was Avery Kelly who put up two buckets in a row to surpass the Copper Kings for a 10-6 Marquette lead.
An Olivia McMahon double helped give the Redettes a 14-6 lead with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter. The Copper Kings struggled to find their footing after a quick start as play rolled on to the second quarter.
The Copper Kings made some headway on their deficit, improving their side of the scoreboard to 10. Rayna Warchock put up a triple to improve the Redettes to 19-10 though as Marquette continued to dictate the pace of play.
Calumet hit a few triples of their own to bring their deficit within seven at one point. A Maddie Carter double put the Redettes back out front by nine though, the score 27-18 with two minutes to go.
In spite of some great shooting from behind the arc for Calumet, Marquette closed out the half with a 29-21 lead over the Copper Kings.
Calumet’s Djerf started the third quarter off with yet another triple to help bring the Copper Kings within five points of Marquette. A scoring run for Calumet led to Marquette having to battle back out to a double digit lead. A Hannah Young bucket and free throw helped put the Redettes at 41-28 going into the final quarter.
Marquette started the fourth quarter ready to protect their lead against Calumet as the score progressed to 43-30. Calumet went on a 5-0 run with a bucket then a steal to cut the Redettes’ lead to 47-38. Aspen Michelin followed up at the line, however, to answer. It seemed every time the Copper Kings came up with a little fire, the Redettes were there to snuff out the flame.
Tonight’s 55-42 victory marks the Redettes’ eight consecutive win as their 2019-2020 season chugs full steam ahead.
