The Marquette Redmen Hockey Team (1) Takes the Ice Against the Alpena Wildcats (0) in Bay Reps Showcase on FoxSportsMarquette 105.1 & 99.9FM and 103-FXD!
- Updated: January 11, 2019
Traverse City, MI – January 11th, 2019 – After a victory the previous night, the Marquette Redmen Hockey team took on the Alpena Wildcats for their second game of the Bay Reps Showcase. John Thomsen and Joe Gaffney were broadcasting from the stands to bring you all the action on FoxSportsMarquette 105.1 & 99.9FM and for the big game of the week on 103-FXD!

The Marquette Redmen hockey team was out-sized for their game against the Alpena Wildcats, but that didn’t seem to be a problem for the agile Redmen as they played the first several minutes of the game in the Alpena zone. Shots were at 4-3 for the Wildcats, but Marquette was moving the puck very well, allowing them to skate around the slower Wildcats. Alpena used their size advantage for the first time after five minutes of play when a Wildcats’ player nailed a Marquette player on a huge open-ice hit. The Redmen player luckily escaped any major issues, but the entire Marquette team sensed the possible danger all around them. With just about eight minutes to play in the first period, the first penalty of game was called on the Redmen, but they managed to escape without giving-up any points. There were just under four minutes left in the period, and Marquette was able to successfully kill the Alpena power play, keeping the score at 0-0. Marquette coach Doug Garrow could be heard yelling from the bench, encouraging his players to skate hard before the first period buzzer. With just seconds left in the period, Marquette managed to be called for a holding, giving Alpena another shot at a power play to start the second period.
First Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 0
Alpena Wildcats: 0
Starting the second period down a skater, the Marquette Redmen were able to successfully kill the penalty and bring it back to five-on-five hockey. The Redmen were able to put the first point of the game onto the scoreboard when senior Sean O’Connor put the puck into the net off his own rebound in front of the circles. Keeping with the theme of the game, Marquette was called for yet another penalty, but thanks to their great penalty killing abilities, they kept the score at 1-0 in their favor. With just under three minutes left in the second period, the Redmen were called for their sixth penalty, and that gave the Wildcats a shot to tie the score. At just over one minute left to play, Marquette continued to lead, and they would go into the final period ahead by the narrowest of margins.
Second Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 1
Alpena Wildcats: 0
Although they gave up four penalties in the second period, the Marquette Redmen had a slim one-point lead entering the third and final period. John and Joe joked that the refs must have been from a Marquette rival school because Marquette was called for every single possible infraction, resulting in a huge difference in the number of penalties for each team. Marquette’s Cammarata put a great shot on goal four minutes into the third period, but after a scrum in front of the net, the score remained at 1-0. The tension in the rink was visible as the seconds fell off of the score clock, and with about five minutes left in the game, the Redmen continued to cling to their one-goal lead. The play started to get very rough as the Wildcats scrambled to even the score up, but the Redmen weren’t going to let some rough play stop them from taking home the win. Alpena pulled their goalie for the last 90 seconds of the game, giving them an extra skater, but Marquette held on through the pressure to take the win.
Final Game Score
Marquette Redmen: 1
Alpena Wildcats: 0
