The Marquette Redmen (1) Face Off With the Calumet Copper Kings (6) in High School Hockey Action 12/06/16
- Updated: December 6, 2016

Marquette, MI – December 6th, 2016 – The Calumet Copper Kings came to Marquette to take on the Marquette Redmen hockey team in the first game of the week on Tuesday. Both teams were evenly matched going into the game, but the Copper Kings controlled the early part of the first period. Calumet scored the first goal, however, less than two minutes later, Marquette evened the score at 1-1 on a great wrist shot. The scoring continued, and at the six minute mark of the first, the Copper Kings retook the lead with their second goal of the game. Marquette had two penalties in the first period, and that seemed to prevent the Redmen from making a comeback late in the period.
First Period Score:
Marquette Redmen: 1
Calumet Copper Kings: 2
The Marquette Redmen were still in the game at the start of the second period, but just under two minutes in, the Copper Kings scored on a deflected puck that made it though heavy traffic in front of the net. Although the Redmen were able to stick with Calumet in the first period, the second period was a different story. Calumet scored their fourth goal of the game midway through the period, but Marquette was able to force multiple penalties from the Copper Kings, giving them some hope. The game was nearing the final period when Marquette forced two penalties from Calumet, giving them a 5-on-3 for just over a minute, but the Redmen were unable to score. Before the end of the second period, Calumet would add to their total, increasing their lead over Marquette.
Second Period Score:
Marquette Redmen: 1
Calumet Copper Kings: 6
It was going to be a tough final period for the Marquette Redmen if they had any hope of making a comeback. Things looked bleak, but there was still time on the clock. The Redmen did everything they could to fight back, but a freak accident ended the game early. On a hit that rattled the boards, a pane of glass fell out of the boards right behind the Calumet goal. After a minor delay, it was determined that there was no replacement, so the game was called with just over eight minutes remaining.
Final Game Score:
Marquette Redmen: 1
Calumet Copper Kings: 6
