The first shot of the game resulted in a goal to give the Redmen an early 1-0 lead. Thomas Dunleavy went coast to coast and found the back of the net on a power play with 3:35 gone in the first period.
Houghton put the pressure on Marquette late in the period and tied it up at 1-1 with just two minutes to go.
With less than one minute on the clock, play was stopped as a pane of glass fell and needed some attention. The players were ushered off of the ice with the game still tied at 1-1. The 50 seconds still on the clock was added to the next period.

The Gremlins took charge at the start of the second period with a power play goal just 25 seconds into play. Another Gremlin goal followed in short order to bring the Houghton lead to 3-1 over the Redmen.
The swing in momentum for Houghton was evident. The Gremlins pulled off their third goal of the period to bring the score to 4-1. Another followed shortly to widen the Gremlins’ lead to 5-1.
Houghton was able to get one more shot off before the buzzer to bring their lead to 6-1 going into the final period.

The Redmen came out a little stronger at the start of the third period with several quality goal attempts to just one for Houghton in the opening minutes.
There was no scoring in the final period; the Redmen had many quality shots on goal and would not let the Gremlins find the back of the net. In spite of a tough second period, the Redmen came back and stayed with the dominant Houghton team.
The Redmen will be at home against the Negaunee Miners on Tuesday, February 19th on 97.5 GTO. The pregame show will start at 6:30 pm, the puck drops at 7:00 pm.
