Redmen Hockey Wins Second Game Of The Day Against Jeffers 8-1

Marquette, MI February 20, 2021 The Marquette Redmen hockey team faced off against the Jets of Jeffers for the first time in 35 years. This was the second game Saturday evening for the Redmen. Their first game of the day was against the Kingsford Flivvers which ended via the mercy rule, 9-1. Would Jeffers fare any better against the Redmen?

First Period: Jeffers started off winning the opening face off, but sent it straight down the rink for an icing call. They would then win the second face off of the game immediately following the call. Marquette however would score at 8:55 on their fifth shot attempt of the game. Dylan Baldwin was able to bury one in net with the Colin Nemacheck scoring the assist. The period would end with the Redmen on top 1-0.

Second Period: Marquette started the second period short handed. The Redmen were looking to stifle whatever momentum the Jets had going into the period with the power play. Marquette were carrying a perfect penalty kill record going into this game, and wouldn’t tarnish it. Jackson Potulny would lay a hit on a Jet in the corner which would spit the puck out to Joseph Luke awaiting the shot. The shot wouldn’t go, but Potulny would put the puck in net off of the rebound at 9:26 of the game.

The Redmen would keep the puck in the Jeffers side of the rink and continue to pepper the opposing goaltender. It would pay off at 15:58 when Jacob Garrow scored with the dish from Baldwin and Frost. That would end the period with the Redmen up 3-0.

SOG: Marquette 21 – Jeffers 2

Third Period: The Redmen wouldn’t wait very long to put one in the net to start the final 17 minutes. Dylan Baldwin would dangle his way through defenders and bury the puck on the short side. The shot was assisted by Joe DeMattia and that put Marquette up, 4-0. The game would go back and forth with Marquette continuing to shoot the puck at a high rate.  The Jets captain, Brent Heinonen, would answer the bell and avoid the shut out by putting one past the Redmen goaltender and making the score, 4-1.

Marquette couldn’t let the Jeffers goal go unanswered. Evan Kroll would score off of a Jace Moore assist bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of the Redmen. Dylan Baldwin would once again score and gain himself a hat trick and :28 later Ethan Phillips would score one assisted by Luke bringing the score, 7-1.  The Jeffers would then have a power play opportunity, but it wouldn’t matter as Jacob Garrow scored a short-handed goal from DeMattia and Frost.

Final: Marquette 8 – Jeffers 1
