Play got off to a slow start in the first period, though the Redmen moved the puck well. Brennan Hakkola came up with an excellent save, doing his part to protect the Marquette net. The first period finished scoreless, Marquette moving into the second period shorthanded giving the Bulldogs the power play and a chance to inject some life into the game.
The Redmen successfully moved out of the penalty kill unscathed as the second period got underway. However, Marquette was continually plagued by penalties, playing shorthanded for most of the first half of the period. In spite of their struggles, the Redmen were able to protect the net. The score stayed at 0-0 with 8 minutes to go.
Something had to give, however, and the Bulldogs experienced a swing in momentum as Brandon LaVigne snagged the first goal of the game for Hancock to bring the score to 1-0 over the Redmen.
Austin Salani took that momentum and ran with it to score for the Bulldogs again in the waning seconds of the period. Hancock went into the third at 2-0 over Marquette.
The Redmen struggled to find their chance to answer the Hancock goals early in the third period. There were a couple of close Marquette shots on goal, but the period went scoreless. The Bulldogs took home the 2-0 victory over the Redmen.
