Redmen Hockey Mercies the Negaunee Miners, 9-1

Marquette, MIJanuary 7, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team won 9-1 against the Negaunee Miners to put a mercy end to the game tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redmen seemed to be chomping at the bit as they zoomed in and scored within the first 30 seconds of the first period. Gaetano Cammarata put the puck in its place with assistance from Ethan Phillips and Dylan King to take a very early lead of 1-0 over the Negaunee Miners.

The Miners hung with the Redmen for a while until Cooper Anderson scored a short-handed goal off of a rebound from an Ansel Frost shot. The Redmen lead inched out to 2-0 with less than half of the period to go. Two more Marquette goals, one from Cammarata and one from Cole Ranta, followed in short order to put the score at 4-0 just before the buzzer.

The Redmen picked right back up where they left off, controlling play from the early going in the second period. It was the Miners who struck first, however, as Jack Mattias found the back of the net to put Negaunee on the board at 4-1 behind Marquette.

The Redmen answered with a goal from Jacob Peterson, assisted by Hogan Nemetz, to put the Marquette lead at 5-1 over the Miners. Joe DeMattia quickly followed up with another Redmen goal to put the score at 6-1. Peterson then buried the puck with help from Dylan Baldwin to act as the bread in this Marquette Redmen scoring sandwich. The period ended with the Redmen up 7-1 over Negaunee.

Ansel Frost got things going in the opening seconds of the third period with a goal to make it 8-1 and put the Miners in serious danger of a mercy end. A Jack Sides goal did just that in spite of Miners goalie Ryan Kerkela doing his best to keep the Redmen at bay. Sides sent the puck into the Miners’ net to officially put a mercy end to the game.

Tune in to catch the Redmen take on the Escanaba Eskymos next Thursday, January 16th on 103 WFXD. The pregame show starts at 6:30 pm, the puck drops at 7:00 pm.
