Redmen Hockey Clinch 6-2 Victory Against Port Huron Northern

Sault Ste. Marie, MIJanuary 24, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team clinched a 6-2 victory against the Port Huron Northern Huskies on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redmen will take on the Huskies twice this weekend at the Soo Showcase in the Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie. Tonight’s game started out with the Redmen in penalty kill mode for a good portion of the first five or six minutes. Marquette had plenty of looks at the net, however, as the Redmen aimed to strike first and get the early lead.

Strike first they did as Cole Ranta put the Redmen on the board at 6:23 with a steal off of Husky Steven Fleet and a goal. The short-handed score put Marquette at 1-0 over Port Huron Northern in the early going.

Ansel Frost followed up a few minutes later with a power play goal at 10:53 to put the Redmen at 2-0 over the Huskies. Ethan Phillips and Gaetano Cammarata assisted to help give Marquette the advantage going into the first break.

The second period again started with some good looks at the goal for Marquette, but the Huskies continued to play some physical, aggressive hockey. The Redmen found themselves on their back foot as the pace of play picked up considerably.

The period remained scoreless until Gaetanno Cammarata broke the spell with a late goal, the assist from Ryan Baldwin. This time the Huskies had an answer though, as Josh Simpson found the back of the net to put Port Huron Northern on the board. The score settled at 3-1 going into the final period.

A burst of scoring from the Redmen kicked off the third period. First, Cammarata took it from coast to coast for his second goal of the evening. The assist came from Dylan King out of the face off. Andrew Fedrizzi followed up immediately with another goal, assisted by Evan Kroll. The Redmen jumped out to 5-1 with less than five minutes gone in the third.

The Huskies had an answer with a goal of their own as the energy in the building reached an all-time high in the game. Marquette stayed out front with the 5-2 lead.

Jacob Garrow served up the final goal of the game to give the Redmen the four-goal lead in the closing minutes of the period. The 6-2 victory give the Redmen the edge going into tomorrow’s rematch against the Huskies, but Port Huron will be hungry for a ‘W’ of their own.
